Cable Tester

  • Verify connection from one end of a cable to another.
  • Has a generator side and a tester side.
  • Verifies correct pinout making sure the LEDs light up in the right order.

Toner Probe

  • Allows you to trace a cable and find the end point.
  • Composed of trace wire/cable.
  • Generator produces tone.
  • Probe listens for tone.

Cable Certifier

  • Verifies bandwidth and frequency to make sure it matches the spec
  • Can test any type of cable

Butt Set

  • Test POTS connection
  • Demarc point is where the installer comes in
  • Connect to line and then call
  • Used when installing

Crimper

  • Primary for cable termination but can cut and strip cables.
  • For ethernet, coaxial and fiber cables.
  • Make sure you have the correct terminating end/wire sequence/color sequence.

Punch Down Tool

Terminates cable into a block, patch panel or keystone

Be aware of blade size as the blade is specialized to the block size.  Make sure the cutting edge is facing towards the excess length of cable.

Protocol Analyzer

  • Plug into network that lets you listen into traffic.
  • As simple as Wireshark or a whole special device.

Loop Back Plug

  • Takes the send cables and loops them back to the receive port
  • Used to verify the NIC functionality

TDR/Time Domain Reflectometer

  • Device which sends signals and listens for reflections back.
  • Estimate cable length.
  • Finds cable faults and splices.

OTDR/Optical Time Domain Reflectometer

TDR for fiber.

Multimeter

  • A device that measures electricity.
  • Resistance.
  • Current
  • Voltage
  • Continuity

Environmental Monitor

  • Measure the room environment.
  • May be used to shut down components or turn on cooling automatically.
  • Humidity.
  • Temperature.
  • Air Particles.
